Biochemistry

The Biochemistry Department performs a spectrum of testing that ranges from automated, high throughput analysis to specialised 'one-off' testing.  We perform over 400 different tests and routine tests are usually completed within 2 hours of sample delivery.  Areas of particular expertise include therapeutic drug monitoring, autoimmune serology, endocrine testing, immunoassay, lipidology, protein electrophoresis, and chromatography.  The laboratory is registered with the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) for medical testing.

Special testing includes a wide range of tests; the tests may be run as batches on semi automated instruments, or may be done on 'one off' basis.  The specialist sections include the Protein and Lipid, Chromatography and Autoimmune Serology sections.

  • The Protein and Lipid Laboratory offers a sophisticated service for the characterisation of gammopathies and other investigations of serum proteins, along with specialised Lipid assays.
  • Chromatography is used to measure a range of endogenous compounds such as catecholamines, hydroxyindole acetic acid and homocysteine and HbA1c.  Xenobiotics including therapeutic drugs and antimicrobials are also measured.  The section has a reputation for offering an extensive menu of tests for antimicrobial and antiviral agents.
  • Autoimmune Serology has special expertise in the investigation of connective tissue, gastrointestinal and renal diseases.  Laboratory investigation of neuropathies and paraneoplastic syndromes is also offered. Please refer to the Immunopathology page for further details.
