Ensure specimen is labelled with:

  • Patient Name, Surname & 1st name
  • UR # if applicable
  • Date of birth
  • Specimen site, & Date & Time of Collection

Specimens - Sterile, plain swab in labelled tube (white top).

This swab is suitable for female endocervical swabs and conjunctival swabs for PCR.

 

ENT/urethral swab, straight wire in labelled tube (orange top).

This swab is suitable for male urethral swabs.
Please note:

  • An alternative specimen to cervical or urethral swabs is 10-50 ml of first catch urine sample.
  • A single swab can be used for both Chlamydia and N.gonorrhoeae PCR. Please state clearly on request form if N.gonorrhoeae PCR is required.

Collection instructions

Female endocervical

  1. Remove excess mucus from endocervix and surrounding mucosa using a sterile swab and discard.
  2. Insert the second swab 1 to 1.5 cm into the endocervical canal. Rotate swab clockwise for 10 to 30 seconds in the endocervical canal to ensure adequate sampling.
  3. Withdraw swab carefully; avoid any contact with vaginal mucosa.
  4. Fully insert swab into transport tube.

Male urethral

  1. Insert swab 2 to 4 cm into urethra. Rotate clockwise for 2 to 3 seconds to ensure contact with all urethral surfaces.
  2. Fully insert swab into transport tube.

Conjunctival

  1. Remove purulent material from conjunctiva using a sterile swab and discard.
  2. Evert upper eyelid and firmly roll a second swab across the tarsal conjunctiva three times using firm pressure to obtain epithelial cells.
  3. Fully insert swab into transport tube.
