| Patient Preparation | Give the patient a MSU container and patient instructions (see below). Make sure the container is clearly labelled with patient details. | ||
| Collection Instructions | PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS: FEMALE 1. Write your full name, D.O.B. & date and time of collection on jar provided. 2. Wash your hands. Remove lid from container and place it within easy reach, DO NOT touch the inside of the jar. 3. Swab the outer vaginal area with the three towelettes provided. Wipe from front to back, using one towelette. Using middle and index fingers of the hand, spread open the inner skin folds and commence passing urine. Urine flow is commenced, and without interrupting the stream, catch the middle part of the urine stream into the container. Collect about half a jar of urine. Finish voiding into the toilet. Screw cap firmly on jar. Wash your hands and hand specimen to the staff member or your local collection centre as soon as possible. MALE Wash your hands Remove lid from container and place it within easy reach (e.g. on top of toilet cistern). Gently retract the foreskin (if present), wash glans of penis with towelette provided, wiping away from the urethral. Commence urine stream into toilet and without stopping the flow, collect the middle part of the specimen in the container. Finish voiding in the urinal/toilet. Screw cap firmly on jar. Wash your hands and hand specimen to the staff member or your local collection centre as soon as possible. | ||
