Director of Anatomical Pathology
Associate Professor Richard Williams MB BS, PhD, FRCPA, FHKCPath, FHKAM(Pathol),
FRSM, MIAC, MRACMA
After graduating from the University of Adelaide, South Australia in 1973 with a M.B.B.S. Richard spent 5 1/2 years in clinical medicine at the Royal
Adelaide Hospital, before beginning anatomical pathology training at Flinders Medical Centre. Here he developed strong interests in gastrointestinal
pathology, dermatopathology and the use of morphometric and other quantitative methods to achieve reproducibility in diagnostic pathology. During this
period he also participated in the provision of Coronial autopsy service to South Australia.
After completion of the RCPA Fellowship he spent a year as Senior Registrar at Flinders before taking up a position at Wangaratta District Base Hospital,
becoming Director of this service in 1988 and Director of the NEV Cytology Service. From 1993 till 1996 he was Director/owner of the Wangaratta and District
Pathology Service.
He continued his research interests during his time in Wangaratta, publishing a textbook on pathology of the vermiform appendix and obtaining his PhD
from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam in 1995 for his work on the quantitative pathology of melanocytic skin neoplasms.
In 1996 Richard was appointed Associate Professor (academic) in the Department of Pathology, University of Melbourne and Principal Specialist at St. Vincent's
Pathology. He has a keen interest in teaching and assessment as well as being actively involved in a variety of research projects. He currently
has over one hundred publications and presentations to his name.
Richard was appointed Director of Anatomical Pathology at St. Vincent's Health in 2000 and is a member of the Cytopathology Advisory Committee and Academic
Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and is the immediate past Chief Examiner in Anatomical Pathology for the RCPA. |
